Every time I drink coffee, I really have to pee. Does this happen to everyone? If so, why? Also, every time I pee after drinking coffee, it smells very strongly like coffee. Not that I make an effort to smell it. Thanks in advance.

It’s a popular belief that caffeine, which is found in coffee, is a diuretic. A diuretic is a substance that increases the flow of urine to rid the body of excess water. Diuretics also increase the elimination of waste in the body by removing them when you urinate. Caffeine is thought to have an unfavorable influence on your body’s fluid balance, meaning that it affects your kidneys, producing excess urine. Your kidneys produce ADH (antidiuretic hormone), which helps you maintain the correct amount of fluid. When you consume diuretics, such as those found in alcohol or caffeinated beverages, your kidneys are unable to produce ADH, so your body doesn’t retain water and it is expelled through urination.

Why does coffee make you pee? Caffeine is considered to be a diuretic, which is a compound that increases the body’s rate of producing urine. However, this reputation may be inaccurate. The New York Times reported that consuming a caffeinated beverage only increases urination as much as water does. An article in a 2003 issue of The Journal of Human Nutrition and Diet explained that drinking 250 to 300 mg of caffeine (two or three cups of coffee) could result in a slight increase in urination for someone who hasn’t consumed caffeine for several days. However, with repeated consumption, the body quickly becomes accustomed to the consequences of caffeine, decreasing its diuretic effect.
